FLOAT: "A UTOPIAN PLACE" EDIT FILMED INTERVIEW

The short film Float is filmed completely under water and show people who are trans or gender queer when they swim naked. Sam Berliner has directed, and self-identifies as trans and queer. Float is inspired by Sam's own experience of swimming with people who are not cis. Specifically, he thinks of the Gender Odyssey Conference in Seattle that takes place in August every year. There are always spontaneous pool parties at the hotel where they all stay. It's a great thing for people who normally are not comfortable with swimming or wearing bathing suits - where it does not matter! All of which were transformed.

"BODIES CAN LOOK AT A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS - ALL ARE BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING"

Sam wanted to recreate that great feeling of freedom so those who were not there could experience it - the result was Float. And that feeling is universal, he says. One need not be queer or trans. Mainstream media has very narrow limits for how bodies may look like - but most of us does not look like that.

Videotaping was a strong experience for Sam. "I have my own body issues as most everyone does. And towards the end of the recording week I felt so comfortable in my body! I felt: bodies are cool! Bodies can look a lot of different ways - every one is beautiful and amazing. I hope that the audience not only feels relaxed, thoughtful and quiet after seeing the film, but also that they feel that they appreciate all the different kinds of bodies."
